Jeremiah 9:23-24

Introduction:

The events of recent days have compelled me to speak out about the daily pain of racism inflicted on our African American brothers and sisters, along with other people of color. I can say I proudly pastor a multicultural church, blacks, whites, Hispanics born in the United States, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean. I have felt upset, disturb, and grieving for the tragic death of George Floyd and also, I want to include Ahmaud Arbery and the others who have been victimized by act of violence and of injustice. Black life matters. And my prayer goes to the family members too.

What does it mean injustice?

  • iniquity, sin, wickedness, wrong, any violation of another’s rights

1. What Scriptures say about Injustice

The Bible has a lot to say on the subject of injustice, for one thing for sure, we know God is a just God

The writers of the Bible say it like this

  • (Proverbs 20:23) 23 The Lord detests double standards; he is not pleased by dishonest scales.

  • (Psalms 89:14) 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.

  • (Romans 9:14) 14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not!

A. God wants more justice in the World

  • (Amos 5:24) 24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.

B. God wants us to Practice justice (What Does the Lord Require?)

  • (Micah 6:6-8) “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

C. God wants our just Action more than our sacrifices to Him

  • (Proverbs 21:3) The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices

D. Justice is demonstrated through Mercy and Compassion

  • (Zechariah 7:8-10) Then this message came to Zechariah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another.10 Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.

Conclusion:  People tend to admire 3 things about others

  • their wisdom
  • their power
  • and their riches

But God puts a higher priority

  • One, that we one truly knows him
  • Two, to understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love
  • Three, a God who brings justice and righteousness to the earth

Pastor, are we living in the End Times?

  • 40% of the world’s countries will witness civil unrest in 2020
  • 75 out 195 are experiencing rising levels of civil unrest, which means, demonstration, riot, hostile towards authority and authorities encounter difficulties in maintaining public safety and order
  • There are demonstrations in the streets of Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Tibet, Turkey, Ukraine, Greece, Haiti, Hong Kong, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Netherlands, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the United States of America
  • Pastor, are we living in the End Times?

(Jeremiah 9:23-24) NLT

23 This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.

24 But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!

Jeremiah

  • Jeremiah became a prophet 627 – 586 B.C.

  • For 40 years he served as God spokesman to Judah (the southern kingdom)

  • His purpose to urge God’s people to turn from their sins and back to God

  • His message was very simple, “Repent and turn to God, or he will punish”

But God puts a higher priority

  • One, that we one truly knows him
  • Two, to understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love
  • Three, a God who brings justice and righteousness to the earth
